Long-distance train operator CrossCountry is celebrating the opening of Cambridge South station, with around 30 weekday services calling at the new station on its route between Birmingham and Stansted Airport.

Backed by £250 million of Government funding, the new station is expected to welcome around 1.8 million passengers a year and provides direct rail access to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, one of Europe’s leading centres for healthcare, research and life sciences.

CrossCountry customers will benefit from direct links to Stansted Airport, Peterborough, Leicester and Birmingham, where they can connect to destinations across the length and breadth of the CrossCountry network.

CrossCountry’s Service Delivery Director, Nick Westcott, said: “We’re delighted to be serving Cambridge South from day one. This important new station will improve access to one of the UK’s most significant healthcare, research and business destinations, while providing customers with many convenient direct connections, as well as onward journeys across our wider network.

“The opening of Cambridge South will transform journeys for the around 40,000 people who visit the Cambridge Biomedical Campus each day, supporting easier access to jobs, education, healthcare and economic opportunities across the region.”

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: “The opening of Cambridge South is our rail reform agenda delivering real results for communities – cutting journey times, improving access to jobs, and making everyday life that little bit easier for thousands of people.

“This £250 million investment means a journey that once took over an hour – involving a train, a bus, and a walk – is now a single 45-minute direct train from London. That’s a real, tangible difference in people’s lives.

“With up to 20 services in peak hours connecting passengers to London, Birmingham, Stansted, and beyond, Cambridge South will connect people with opportunities across the region and the wider country.”

Cambridge South station is served by CrossCountry’s route between Birmingham New Street and Stansted Airport, strengthening rail links between the East of England, the Midlands and beyond.
