The RSPCA is appealing for information after the body of two dead pups were found on separate occasions under a blanket in a hole in Chelmsford.

The bodies were discovered in a green space near to flats in Pearce Manor by a member of the public who was walking through the area and found the first body at around 7.30pm on July 28.

Then the following day at around 3.30pm there was another puppy’s body found in the hole next to the other dog.

The incident was reported to the RSPCA and an officer attended the location and one of the bodies had already been removed.

The officer removed the remaining body and searched for the other body and carried out enquiries in the local area.

A spokesperson for the RSPCA said: “It must have been very upsetting for the member of the public to find these puppies and we are grateful to them for contacting us.

“The puppy is very young and appears to have been there for a little while as the body was quite decomposed – so a cause of death could not be determined but the circumstances in which they were found is suspicious which is why we are appealing for information.

“It could be the puppies died during birth but we would like to try and find the owner so we can check on the mum.

“Anyone who has any first hand information is urged to contact us on 0300 123 8018 and can quote incident 01867748.”

The sad case comes during the charity’s Cruelty Hurts Love Rescues fundraising campaign which coincides with the charity’s busiest time as cruelty reports peak over summer.

Newly published statistics show in June, July and August last year the RSPCA received 6,322* cruelty calls to their emergency line last year which is one call every 10 minutes when the line is open. In comparison the charity took 3,852 calls for the same period in 2021 – showing a massive 64% increase in just 5 years.

Every summer, animal cruelty peaks. Right now, it’s at its highest level in five years.
But cruelty isn’t the strongest force at work this summer. Love is. Together, we can turn this season of cruelty into one of love, kindness and rescue for animals that need it the most and you can help by supporting the RSPCA’s Cruelty Hurts, Love Rescues campaign.
