More than 1,400 people viewed the plans for the redevelopment of East Square in Basildon Town Centre at the weekend with an overwhelming response in support of the project.

The redevelopment provides an opportunity to reflect Basildon’s cultural heritage. The two events gave residents and shoppers an opportunity to give their thoughts on how this could be reflected.

The events were held on the ground floor of Eastgate Shopping Centre near Starbucks on Friday 15 June and Saturday 16 June.

During Friday’s event council officers engaged with almost 600 people about the plans with a further 800 on Saturday.

The proposals include up to six new restaurants and a 10 screen cinema operated by Empire Cinemas, alongside enhancements to East Square and the surrounding area.

The proposals are part of the ambitious regeneration plans for the town centre and reflect the vision set out in the 2012 masterplan to create a vibrant day/night economy in the town centre.
