Sporting Memories club launches at Witham Leisure Centre

Sporting Memories, a charity which operates free community-based clubs across Great Britain that welcome older people that have a passion for sport and want to make friends and connections in their local community, is opening a new club at Witham Leisure Centre.

The club uses the power of remembering and talking about sport alongside physical activity to support older people aged 50+ to live better lives, including those living with dementia, depression, or living in isolation and lonely circumstances.

The club provides a great opportunity for local people from all backgrounds to share their stories, take part in a weekly session that ignites old memories through photographs and quizzes, and get active again with a range of fun games and inclusive exercises. If that isn’t enough, there’s also the opportunity to have a cup of tea or coffee (normally with some biscuits included!) at half-time.

The club, at Fusion’s Witham Leisure Centre, is looking for members to come along and enjoy the weekly session as well as local people who have the time and interest to volunteer to help run or support the clubs.

Without volunteers, Sporting Memories clubs across Great Britain wouldn’t be able to run and all volunteers are provided with training and support to help them deliver engaging sessions for members – even for those who aren’t interested in sport!

The new club will meet every Friday between 10:30am and 12:30pm at Witham Leisure Centre, Spinks Lane, Witham, CM8 1EP.
Chris Wilkins, CEO of Sporting Memories, commented: “Sporting Memories clubs provide a fun set of social and physical activities that allow older sports fans, including those who are more physically or cognitively frail, and all those connected with them, from family members and carers, to have a great time whilst creating relationships and companionship with people with similar interests in their local community.”
“We’d really encourage people from the local community to get involved with the club, either as members or volunteers, as they provide a unique opportunity for people to get together and to bond over great sporting moments of the past or present and to take part in some fun, fully inclusive games.”
