A nine-year-old boy who scaled Britain’s highest mountain in aid of the country’s Service Personnel has been honoured at an awards ceremony.

Alfie McAnespie, from Colchester, climbed Ben Nevis with Coronation Street’s Antony Cotton in July, raising nearly £4,000 for the military charity, Help for Heroes.

Alfie was one of 25 people who were presented with the Charity’s most prestigious honour, a Hero Award, at Tedworth House Recovery Centre on Friday, October 20.

His Mum, Anja, said it was an emotional moment, and was “brimming with pride” when he took to the stage.

She said: “It is such a humbling experience, and nice to get some sort of recognition. But Alfie has grown up with the military so doesn’t think anything of it when he sees the wounded soldiers. He is very familiar with it, and cannot understand why he is getting honoured.”
