Larrit Shoes boss gives nine tips for buying footwear

Larrit Shoes will be exhibiting at Fashions Finest SS18 this London Fashion Week. We caught up with the designer.

Omolara Olukotun is a philanthropist, businesswoman, and founder of luxury footwear brand Larrit Shoes, who doesn’t follow convention in design or her life.

We asked her about her top tips when buying shoes.

1. Wait until the afternoon to shop for shoes — your feet naturally expand with use during the day and may swell in hot weather.

2. Wear the type of socks that you intend to wear with your footwear.

3. Get both feet measured every time you buy new shoes. If one foot is larger or wider than the other, buy the size best suited for the larger foot.

4. Stand in the shoes. You should have at least a quarter- to a half-inch of space between your longest toe and the edge of the shoe.

5. Walk around in the shoes to figure out how they feel. Do you have enough room at the balls of the feet? Are the heels a snug fit, or do they pinch or slip off? And let’s debunk the myth that the shoes just need to be “broken in” or that they’ll stretch with time. Shoes should fit from the start.

6. Trust your own comfort level over a shoe’s size or description. Sizes vary amongst manufacturers. Don’t fall marketing spill no matter how comfortable an advertisement claims those shoes are, you’re the jury is out until you have tried them. If you need wide fit shoes for women, then you need wide fit shoes for women, and there’s nothing wrong about that. The most important thing is that they feel comfortable for you, everything else can follow after.

7. Feel the inside of the shoes for any tags, seams, or other material that might irritate your feet or cause blisters.

8. Examine the soles. Do they provide sufficient protection from sharp objects, any cushioning? Do the soles cushion against impact?

9. Try to walking on hard surfaces and carpet to see how the shoes feel.
