Pupils from St Margaret’s Prep School, in Halstead, have stepped into the world of work as a wide range of professions were brought to life at a special whole-school Careers Fair.

Children right from Nursery through to Year 6 were given the opportunity to explore a variety of jobs through age-appropriate, hands-on activities and hearing about real-life experiences.

The inspirational event was supported by a number of parents, carers and members of the community who represented a broad range of professions. This included the Armed Forces, emergency services, engineering, TV production, nursing, travel and aviation, catering and geology.

Reverend Sue, from St Catherine’s Church, which is local to the school, spoke to the pupils about the wide range of job roles available within the church and the importance of service within the community.

The school’s new Groundskeeper Emma Day spoke also about her unique career journey, having previously worked as a secondary school teacher for several years before retraining in agriculture — a story which captured the children’s interest.

Pupils were able to ask questions, hear stories, see uniforms, handle equipment and take part in practical activities that brought each role to life. They were also able to find out more about how career paths can change and evolve over time.

It is the first time that St Margaret’s Prep School has held a whole-school Careers Fair, with the event carefully structured for pupils aged between two and 11.

It was designed to help pupils begin thinking about the world of work from an early age, while showcasing the wealth of expertise within the school and the wider local community.

It also reflected the school’s commitment to preparing children for life beyond the classroom, helping them develop confidence, curiosity and strong communication skills.

Carolyn Moss, Headteacher of St Margaret’s Prep School, said:

“The Careers Fair was a valuable and memorable experience for all of our pupils.

“It was a very interactive event, and was wonderful to see children of all ages so engaged and confident in speaking with adults, gaining real-life insights directly from those working in a variety of professions.

“Not only did it broaden their understanding of the world of work, but sparked their curiosity and helped further develop their communication skills.

“We are incredibly grateful to all of the parents and community members who took part and helped make the event such a success.”
