A second Essex Masonic Centre earns one of the borough’s highest civic honours – marking a growing movement in Freemasonry for community service and charitable leadership
Orsett Masonic Hall has been awarded the prestigious Mayoral Roll of Honour, one of Thurrock’s highest civic accolades. This recognition, granted to those making a lasting and meaningful impact on the borough, highlights the Hall’s exemplary record of community engagement and service to local people.
This marks the second time an Essex Masonic Centre has received such an honour — following the earlier success of the Cross Keys Community Fund in South Essex. These accolades are not isolated achievements, but key milestones in a wider, strategic effort to demonstrate the very best of Essex Freemasons’ community and charitable work.
For over 11 years, Essex Freemasons have consistently donated £1 million annually to local charities and community groups, building a legacy of practical support, compassion, and civic partnership.
Recognised for its inclusive public events, strong local partnerships, and commitment to charitable giving, Orsett Masonic Hall exemplifies the positive role Freemasonry plays in helping to build stronger, more connected communities — places where people can live, work, learn, and thrive.
“We are deeply honoured to be recognised by the Mayor,” said Richard Bowyer, Chairman, and Jackie Firman, Centre Manager of Orsett Masonic Hall. “This award reflects the dedication of our members and partners, and the shared belief that by working together, we can make a real and lasting difference in Thurrock.”
The Hall has become an integral part of the local community. Seasonal fayres bring together schools, charities, and families, while monthly quiz nights in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind continue to raise funds and strengthen social bonds. These initiatives tell powerful stories — from guide dog puppies named in memory of loved ones to enduring friendships formed through shared purpose.
In June 2025, the Hall launched the Orsett Masonic Community Fund (OMCF) to extend its reach even further. The Fund supports grassroots charities, food banks, youth programmes, and care providers — addressing key issues such as food insecurity, mental health, and social isolation.
“The Orsett Masonic Community Fund is about amplifying local voices and supporting those already making a difference,” said Steve Bruyel, Chairman of the OMCF. “We don’t look to reinvent the wheel; we look to strengthen it.”
David Barton, Provincial Community Lead, added:
“Freemasonry is at its best when it’s in service to others. We are immensely proud of this award, not just for what it recognises, but for what it represents. With both Orsett and the Cross Keys Community Fund now honoured by the Mayor, our Centres are clearly being seen as trusted community partners — engaging wholeheartedly, building relationships, and delivering meaningful impact where it matters most.”
This latest civic recognition is not only a celebration of achievement — it is a symbol of momentum. It reflects the growing visibility of Essex Freemasons as a force for good, and reaffirms our commitment to charitable leadership and community service across the county.
