Over 120 people came to an event hosted by local GP practices in the Central Basildon Primary Care Network to help learn more about how they can look after themselves and others this winter.

The event took place as part of wider plans to arm local residents with all the information and support they need to stay well during the colder months. Teams from nine GP practices came together to host the sell-out winter wellbeing café seminar.

Local GP and Central Basildon Primary Care Network Clinical Director, Dr Subrata Basu, said: “Winter can be a challenging time for people’s health and wellbeing. As well as the usual winter ailments such as coughs, colds and flu, people with long-term conditions can also be more prone to flare-ups and crises that can sometimes end up with an admission to hospital.

“Lots of these health issues can be prevented. We want to make sure people are armed with the right information so they know what to do to protect themselves and manage minor ailments at home, with the advice and support of community pharmacies and other local health and care services.

“Our winter self-care seminars are there to give our older residents confidence to take control and know which services are available to help during those difficult winter months.”

The seminar was one of a series of monthly events organised by the Primary Care Network, all with a focus on promoting wellbeing for older residents.

Participants heard from Bukola Oye, a local Clinical Pharmacist, about the importance of flu vaccinations, good nutrition, looking after their mental health and why it’s important to keep hydrated during the winter months. There was also information about how to make good use of community pharmacies and over-the-counter medicines, as well as how and when to access a range of health and care services.

There was also a talk from social prescriber, Noku Moyo, who explained about the social prescribing services available in the primary care network. She also told them how patients can refer themselves to these services and tips about how people can keep their homes warm this winter period during the cost living crisis.

Patients aged 65 and over, who are registered at the nine GP practices that make up Central Basildon Primary Care Network, were invited to book a place at Monday’s seminar. The free session was fully booked with 125 people attending.

The wellbeing cafe seminars are held once a month at the Happy Hub in Basildon at Eastgate Shopping Centre, with some sessions also held at The Place in Pitsea. Each seminar will have a different theme. Residents can visit the Central Basildon Primary Care Network website for more information or if registered in Central Basildon, speak to their Practice Manager.
