Samsung Sparks Joy At The Seaside With Free Digital Illustrations ‘By Jim’

Brits do like to be beside the seaside, as the mini-heatwave has a third of the nation planning to head to their nearest promenade for the bank holiday weekend.

And when it comes to the most popular UK seaside destinations, Brighton has topped the list in a recent study commissioned by Samsung to mark the launch of the Galaxy Tab S9 series.

So, to celebrate this, and spread a little bit of joy, the brand surprised Brighton seaside-goers with a souvenir like no other, featuring a special guest…

Jim Moir – formerly known as Vic Reeves – set up the UK’s first digital illustration station, powered by the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra.

Using the tablet’s intuitive S Pen, which offers a pen-on-paper-like drawing experience, the artist caught the likeness of tourists and local landmarks as they flocked to Brighton to enjoy the sun. In a modern twist on the popular seaside tradition, Jim sketched digital artwork of passers-by using the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra and its creative suite of apps, much to their delight.

John Sees from Kent was among those who made the trip to the seaside resort – with the 52-year-old lucky enough to be sketched by Jim.

He said: “I came on Brighton Pier for a walk and did a double take when I saw him. I thought – that looks like Jim Moir. And it was! I couldn’t believe it. It’s been fabulous to sit with him and get an illustration done. I’ve been a fan of his for years – it really made my day. I’ll certainly be giving the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra a go myself as it looks really intuitive. “

32-year-old Aisha Mitchell from Eastbourne also had their likeness captured by the star and was similarly taken with their portrait.

She said: “I’m really pleased with the illustration – Jim did a great job, it’s so full of his humour.“
No stranger to a career change, Jim Moir – formerly known as comedian Vic Reeves – said, “Painting is what I’ve always done. I’ve always been immersed in a creative environment, and I love exploring new techniques to take my art to the next level. Partnering with Samsung and the incredible Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra has allowed me to try new methods and styles, and I’m so glad I could bring some joy and creativity to Brighton through the power of digital art.”

To embrace your inner artist, Jim Moir shares his top tips for creating gallery-worthy artwork:

1. Experiment with tools: Explore a wide range of materials to discover the ones that resonate with your personal style. I experiment with traditional tools such as brushes and watercolours as well as digital formats such as the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, which provides a pen-on-paper-like drawing experience that really helps elevate my creativity.

2. Find your creativity zone: Select the surroundings that will help your creative juices flow. I switch between my studio at the bottom of the garden for big, messy oil painting, and then migrate to my conservatory for a change of scenery to keep me motivated.

3. Unleash your imagination: Embrace the endless possibilities as you embark on your own artistic journey, and let your imagination run free. You can draw inspiration from anything – I loved birdwatching as a kid so this inspired my work.

Jim Moir was joined in Brighton by TV antiques expert and fine art auctioneer Michael Hogben, having been friends for over 20 years. Jim stars in popular TV travelogue ‘Painting Birds with Jim and Nancy Moir’, where the husband-and-wife duo visit stunning UK locations in search of birds to sketch. Following the huge success of series one, the second season will air on Sky Arts, Freeview and NOW in 2024.
