Dig out the picnic basket and blanket and head to Chelmsford’s Central Park on Saturday 10 June and join the ‘Big Lunch’, from 12.30 – 2.30pm. The ‘Big Lunch’ will be marking the launch of the Chelmsford Festival, that will run in city from 10 June to 9 July.

The ‘Big Lunch’ is a community picnic where everyone from the city’s many different communities can come together for one big celebration of togetherness. Tony Morrison, the Creative Director of the festival says: “June is the month of community, so there’s no better way to celebrate than everyone throwing down a picnic blanket, enjoying some good homemade food and chatting with their neighbour on the grass at Central Park”. Tony continues: “The Big Lunch will be totally community led, there will be no food vendors, so people will need to make and bring their own food, drinks and a smile!”

The organisers are also encouraging picnic lovers to bring flags to hoist, whether it be a country’s flag, a football team’s pennant, or a rainbow, “all will be welcomed,” said Tony.

The organisers are looking for a big turn out to launch the start of the festival and are also hoping that everyone will want to join in the community vibes. Tony adds: “there’s a cost-of-living crisis on, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. So, let’s all get together, pack your kites, balls, frisbees and bats, relax, unwind and have fun in the park.”

Other highlights of The Chelmsford Festival include an art trail and exhibition (11 June – 9 July), The History of Jazz in Essex exhibition (12 – 23 June), Make Music Day (21 June), Essex Pride (24 June), along with many other exciting events throughout the city, including the Chelmsford Carnival on 2 July.
