Get out the bunting and bang the drums – the Chelmsford Festival is returning to the city in 2023! With only three months to go before one of the main highlights of the festival, the Chelmsford Carnival on Sunday 2 July, the organisers are looking for locals to join the party through the city.
The Chelmsford Carnival is much-loved for its vibrant, colourful, and fun-filled celebration through the city. This year it will start at Shire Hall and will wind through the city centre before heading down Moulsham Street and finishing at Chelmsford Museum.

Chelmsford Carnival is one of the first UK carnivals to be an eco-friendly parade with no motorised vehicles taking part. Floats will still be central to the carnival and Chelmsfordians are encouraged to be imaginative and be innovative by using trollies, push chairs, scooters or anything with wheels and motion that can be utilised as a float.

Tony Morrison, the Creative Director of the festival says: “We really want to see some amazing creations out on the streets, we’re looking for bright and beautiful costumes, spectacular puppets, funky dancers and whistles and drums – in fact anything that makes noise!” Tony continues: “The Chelmsford Carnival is an amazing street procession that brings communities together for a day of celebration, and this year we have a new route through the city. The carnival will top off almost a month of the Chelmsford Festival, and we have some great festival events planned in the lead up to the carnival – everything from art trails to Essex Pride.”

The Chelmsford Festival will run from Saturday 10 June to Sunday 9 July. The festival will feature a community picnic (10 June), an art trail and exhibition (11 June – 9 July), Make Music Day (21 June), Essex Pride (24 June), along with many other exciting events throughout the city.
