The witch hunt sites

During the 17th century, witch hunts spanned hundreds of years. People accused of witchcraft spent time in jail, horrific trials, and executions. Some of the sites are open to the public.

Take a walking tour from the Revisiting The Essex Witch Trial Project.  The route is in Manningtree and has twelve stops. At each stop, there is a QR sign that you can scan with your phone for information about that location. The final stop is the memorial for the victims of this horrible time in history.

Other places to go include:

  • Pendle Hill
    • Pendle hill is where the witch trials of Pendle took place in Lancashire. On this site, an entire family was found guilty of witchcraft and executed on the statement of one witness. The witness was Jennet Device, and she was a nine-year-old child.
  • Lancaster Castle
    • The medieval fortress stands today, and it was where the suspected witches of Pendle were held during the trial. The castle also held suspected witches from Padimam, Samlesbury, and Windle. It is said that the witches stayed in a tiny basement cell.
  • Southend pier
    • At 1.34 miles, Southend pier is the longest pier in the world. The pier was built in 1829 and has been open since then. There are carnival rides, cafes, mini golf, and boutique shops. This is a great place to enjoy fun, food, and the sea.
  • Epping Forest
    • Just a short distance from the bustling of London is Epping Forest. Epping Forest is one of the oldest forests in England. You can take the amazing Epping Forest Oak trail hike.

The forest is 2400 hectares (5900 acres) and is said to be home to some of the oldest trees in the world.

Saffron Walden contains five mazes. Perhaps the most famous maze is the Hedge Maze which began construction in the late 18th century. Over the decades, it fell into disarray for a while. The labyrinth was closed a few times for renovation. In 2000, the totally reconstructed maze was restored and opened for future generations to enjoy.

The items we have mentioned are unique and thrilling. We recommend you see them while you are in Essex. However, there are many things in Essex that we have not touched on. Here are some adventures to consider:
