This October, join Lyrici Arts at the table for a soulful storytelling feast that will draw you into a journey that is both intimate and epic in scope. Four compelling tales from four remarkable Black heritage artists, take audiences around the world and across time on a passage of self-discovery. Voyage with us to council house number 11 in England, to Nigeria, to Jamaica, to Ghana, and other worldly realms. Encounter Anansi the Spider, discover self love, immerse yourself in a heart felt family gathering, and hear from ancestors from near and afar.

Four Medway based Black heritage artists have come together to create and tour a show exploring what home, identity and culture means to them, as part of a new production from Black theatre company, Lyrici Arts.

The 2022 HOMEWARD Artist Academy focused on Soul Food – a reference for Black heritage food dishes passed down through generations, such as curry goat, fried dumplings, ackee and saltfish. Food might underpin so much of our culture, but other elements feed the soul, and participants will explore aspirations, culture, identity, music, family and more.

The outcome of the Academy is a series of shows during October 2022 at GlassBox Theatre in Gillingham, The Woodville Theatre in Gravesend and The Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury, in a celebration of community and the cultures that exist within it.

Robyn Goldsmith, Culture Development Manager at Medway Council says:

“It has been an exciting and inspiring experience to support Lyrici Arts. We are so honoured that they are based here, bringing incredible and rare cultural experiences to people in Medway.”

Keely Augustus, Lyrici Arts says:

“We get so much joy from our heritage and culture, and working with these amazing actors and producers and seeing their joy has been amazing. We exist to share voices, tell stories, and celebrate communities, and HOMEWARD: Soul Food has done just that.”

The stories are familiar, yet never before heard: about family, about food, about love, about history and identity. Showcasing an assortment of lyrical styles and modes of storytelling, this is a joyful experience that will leave you full and changed forever.
