Queen Elizabeth II has died today aged 96.

Councillor Andrew Hensman, Chairman of Braintree District Council, said: “It is with great sadness we hear of the announcement of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty was known for her sense of duty and her devotion to a life of service to this country.

“Since 6th February 1952 when she became Queen, Her Majesty’s life has been dedicated to serving this nation. In her 21st birthday speech, she expressed ‘I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong’. Her promise was kept and resulted in an incredible 70 years as our much loved and respected monarch.

“Her Majesty’s support for the hundreds of charities of which she is patron, and her hardworking dedication has been a source of inspiration to so many.

“As a mark of respect, flags at Causeway House in Braintree, Witham Memorial Gardens and Halstead Public Gardens will be flying at half-mast.

“On behalf of Braintree District Council, its officers, staff and Council Members, we join with the rest of the nation in expressing our very great sadness at her death. She will be greatly missed and the impact her reign has had will not be forgotten.”

A letter of condolence will be sent from the Chairman of the Council to Her Majesty’s personal secretary, expressing sympathies on behalf of the Council and residents of the Braintree district.
