GREAT DUNMOW’S HISTORY CELEBRATED BY NEW RETIREMENT HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

A new retirement community is making itself at home in Great Dunmow by celebrating the market town’s fascinating Roman history.

The development, named Stane House, is currently under construction by McCarthy Stone on the High Street in Great Dunmow, Essex. Conveniently located in the centre of Great Dunmow, the name of the development is inspired by a Roman linear settlement which was uncovered along Stane Street, during excavations that took place between 1968 and 1972.

The settlement, which was considered to be a Vicus, extended over 2 to 3 acres, and was occupied from the 1st century AD to the 4th century AD. A Roman cremation cemetery and possible shrine were also discovered along with timber buildings.

Sam Watkins, Divisional Sales Director at McCarthy Stone, said: “We couldn’t ignore the rich history of Great Dunmow when it came to naming this new development, and the relatively recent discovery of the Roman settlement on Stane Street inspired us.

“It is our hope that the residents who one day call Stane House a home will build a strong connection with the local town and community, and celebrating Great Dunmow’s history is just one of the ways we seek to do that.

“Stane House will be perfect for retiree who enjoy the great outdoors, while the central location will also offer homeowners easy access to shops and local amenities. We can’t wait to show the development in all its glory later this year.”

Built by the UK’s leading developer and manager of retirement communities, Stane House will comprise of one and two-bedroom apartments, exclusively for the over 60s. The luxurious apartments will be available to buy off-plan from July, with first occupants expected to move in early 2023 and prospective purchasers are urged to register their interest now to receive updates.

Once complete, Stane House will provide everything the over 60s could want for an enjoyable and independent retirement. Residents will be close to essentials like a post office and pharmacy and the town has a library, community centres and a gym, fitness centre and swimming pool.

Great Dunmow offers plenty of things to do from the extraordinary Talliston House & Gardens, The Forgotten Gardens of Easton Lodge and the pretty village of Thaxted which has a windmill as well as an annual Morris Dancing Festival.

Inside the development, residents will enjoy a stylish homeowners’ lounge, an on-site bistro, which will serve fresh and nutritious meal options for residents daily, as well as a salon and beautifully landscaped gardens.

Customers will also be able to choose from a range of flexible Retirement Living solutions to suit them and their personal circumstances, whether they prefer to buy outright, rent or to take advantage of the part buy, part rent option.
