Can you make Cambridgeshire cat’s birthday special?

Charity volunteers have launched an appeal to find a loving home in time for a cat’s ninth birthday special after Molly’s owner sadly died and she found it hard to adapt to life in care.

Molly came into care at Cats Protection’s Downham Market Adoption Centre in December, following the death of her owner. She had been a loyal and loving companion for many years and didn’t adapt well to the change in circumstances.

Her response to losing her owner and home before Christmas has most likely contributed to Molly being repeatedly overlooked during nearly three months in care.

But the patience of volunteers at a Cambridgeshire branch of the nation’s leading cat charity has brought on a marked change in Molly and they are confident that she is ready for a new home.

Teresa Dixon, Cat Welfare Volunteer at Cats Protection’s Ely and District Branch, said: “When she came into our care, Molly showed signs of being affected by the sudden change in her circumstances and surroundings, which is not uncommon.

“She was extremely distressed at losing her owner and her home and didn’t cope well in a shelter environment, so we transferred her to one of our volunteer fosterers.

“She was hiding and striking out when we approached her, but we gave her space and patience and, over time and with plenty of reassurance, Molly has gained in confidence and begun to enjoy playtime, human company and contact once again.”

Volunteers are looking for a quiet adult-only household with space to relax where Molly will be the only pet and she can take things at her own pace.

Teresa said: “Molly might respond in a similar way when she arrives in her new home, so we want to make sure it’s the right fit for her. We’ve had interest as she is such a cute girl, but these people already had other cats or young families and we wouldn’t risk it not working out and her being brought back into care. She doesn’t deserve that.

“We’ve seen her transform with love, kindness and time and we’re confident that, with a patient and experienced cat owner who can allow her to settle in her own time, Molly will make a wonderful companion.”

Molly’s response to a change in circumstances is not so unusual. When a similar situation persists, despite time and patience, a qualified feline behaviourist might be of help.
