The evolution of beauty through the decades

We all know that fashion trends change quicker than the British weather, and with 2022 hitting our calendars, it’s out with the old and in with the new.

There is a range of popular treatments that men and women reach out for to alter appearances in order to boost body confidence.

But alongside new beauty hacks that are taking the digital world by storm these days, on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, we can’t forget some of the old iconic styles and discoveries which have helped to shape the beauty world today.

In this article, we reflect on the evolution of different beauty trends over the decades.

1980s

The 80s saw the introduction of the first ever anti-ageing products – with the hero ingredient, collagen. Famous for its ability to fight the signs of ageing, this magic component holds many benefits for the skin. It helps to speed up cell turnover rate, erasing the look of fine lines and wrinkles, giving users a more plumped and youthful appearance.

1990s

The rise of pop culture in the 90s resulted in an increase in rhinoplasty and nose surgery due to the number of celebs who were going under the knife to achieve a small and narrow nose.

2000s

The noughties brought us new and improved formulas in skincare products with the introduction of ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and SPF. The importance of including SPFwithin skincare was a huge breakthrough as we discovered the lasting effects that sun damage from UV rays can have on our skin. Alongside these two hero components, we were a rise in antioxidants and peptides also being used within anti-ageing products.

2010s

The course of makeup changed forever in this era, as we waved goodbye to ‘barely there’ makeup, and hello to bold makeup looks. This included the introduction of full-coverage foundation with matte setting powders, alongside prominent, heavily-pencilled brows – giving faces an overall carved-out appearance. Dermal fillers began to gain popularity across the 20s-30s age ranges.

2020s

2020 brought back the focus on natural beauty. Dewy complexions became the new trend, one which is still sweeping the nation of beauty lovers today. Treatments such as HydraFacial’s to moisturise the skin, and micro-needling to resurface and add plumpness, have become go-to rescue remedies within skincare routines. Alongside clinic appointments, our athome beauty regimes have been firmly refreshed too – with the use of natural stone gua shas and dermarollers to help massage away fine lines while increasing blood flow and circulation.
