Painted poppy rocks are to be hidden around Harlow next month in memory of the 128 soldiers who served and died in the first world war.
There will be a total of 129 rocks hidden around the town, one for each of the 128 soldiers from Harlow and one special rock to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
Hiding painted rocks and finding them has become a popular pastime in Harlow, with the council teaming up with Facebook group Harlow Rocks to run this project. The hunt for rocks will begin on 5 October until Remembrance Day on 10 November 2019.
Each rock will link to one of the soldiers and be numbered on the back. Families will be encouraged to take a photo of the rock and bring it in to the Civic Centre (Monday to Friday between 9am and 4.30pm) where a certificate about the soldier will be presented to the person who finds the rock.
All rocks have been decorated by local people who volunteered their time to make them. The rocks have been kindly donated by Wickes.
There has been so much demand to make rocks that extra rocks (without numbers) will be placed around the town for local rockers to find.
