A stunning new facelift is on offer that will change the future of Colchester’s St Botolph’s Quarter, as Team Colchester – a partnership between Colchester City Council and Essex County Council – prepares to formally submit a planning application for the £7 million public realm project next week.
Newly released images reveal a bold vision for the area, centred around a vibrant St Botolph’s Square. This inclusive public space will celebrate Colchester’s rich heritage while supporting its future growth. The submission will mark a major milestone in the area’s regeneration and begins a formal consultation period for the city to review the detailed proposals. If approved, construction is set to begin in Spring 2026.
At the heart of the plans is improved access to the historically rich St Botolph’s Priory This hidden gem is being reimagined as a centrepiece of Colchester’s heritage offering. The designs also feature:
A bespoke play area inspired by the Priory’s unique architecture
Enhanced lighting and safety features
Seamless connections to Colchester Town Rail Station
Every element has been carefully crafted to create a welcoming, accessible space that bridges the city’s past and future.
The submission follows months of extensive public engagement with residents, businesses, community groups, and organisations representing people with sensory impairments and physical disabilities to ensure the scheme is inclusive and accessible to all. Their feedback has directly influenced key aspects of the layout and navigation.
Alongside this, collaboration with Historic England and English Heritage has ensured the scheme not only protects the priory’s historical significance but actively enhances its setting and visibility.
This announcement comes amid rapid change for Colchester’s city centre. Following the successful opening of St Nicholas Square, the ongoing restoration of the Jumbo water tower into a visitor experience, and the upcoming launch of the Digital Forum, the city is on track for a dramatic evolution by 2030.
Cllr David King, Leader of Colchester City Council, said: “St Botolph’s Quarter is a cornerstone of our vision for a vibrant, inclusive city centre. The Priory is a treasure that, in other cities, might sit behind a ticket booth. Here in Colchester, it’s freely accessible – but it has long deserved to be celebrated as the heart of Colchester’s heritage and tourism offer. Guided by residents’ input, we’re creating a space that honours our past while supporting the city’s future vitality.”
