Rees-Mogg: Clacton by-election could determine the future of the right in politics

Jacob Rees-Mogg has questioned whether Nigel Farage has made a “reckless political gamble” by sparking a by-election.

Speaking on GB News he said: “Next weekend, the first CPAC Great Britain conference will commence, bringing together voices from all over the world and all sides of the right to share and discuss conservative solutions to the world’s problems.

“The event comes after another remarkable week in British politics. Nigel Farage has responded to weeks of scandal by resigning and triggering a by-election in his Clacton constituency.

“Main parties have responded by refusing to field candidates, calling it a gimmick, a fake by-election, and the Liberal Democrats even made a plea for the government to block the by-election from going ahead.

“Chancellor Rachel Reeves, in what I think could be an historic first, an indication that she has a sense of humour, has said she won’t block the contest: ‘If he wants to spend the summer arguing with a bin, I won’t stop him,’ quoth she.

“The race between Nigel Farage and Count Binface could determine the future of Reform and therefore the country. But could there be another by-election if Nigel Farage is found to have broken parliamentary rules?

“Are we witnessing a stroke of political genius which could save Nigel’s reputation, or is it a reckless gamble that could leave his political future in tatters?

“And most importantly, will CPAC be the biggest sign yet that the right needs to unite?”
