Students at Roding Valley High School in Loughton enjoyed an inspiring Q&A session with esteemed Scottish author and two-time LA Times Book Prize winner, Andrew O’Hagan in celebration of The National Year of Reading 2026.
Andrew O’Hagan, the author of novels such as Caledonian Road, Be Near Me, Mayflies and more, spoke with the Key Stage 4 and 5 Boys’ Book Club to discuss his experiences as an author, his inspirations, and advice for the school’s budding authors. The visit, organised by Caroline Flynn, Roding Valley High School’s KS3 Lead Teacher, aimed to raise the students’ aspirations and spark creativity.
Caroline said: “I am beyond grateful that Andrew O’Hagan gave up his time to speak with our older Book Club readers. Andrew O’Hagan’s visit was truly a transformative experience for our students. To have the opportunity to not only meet but also receive advice from such an acclaimed author is something most young people can only dream of. 2026 is the National Year of Reading, and with the theme being ‘Go All In’, this visit truly embodies it!”
Levente Sackey, an A Level English Literature student and book club leader said: “It was so exciting to meet Andrew. I’ve come away from the visit with a better understanding of him as an author and invaluable advice on what it means to have a career in writing. It is an experience I won’t forget!”
