TLC Essex is inviting families from across Essex to a very special free Teddy Bear Picnic on Sunday 8 March 2026, marking 25 years of providing comfort to children in hospital and celebrating the presentation of the four-millionth TLC teddy bear. The picnic is intended specifically for children and families who have previously received a TLC teddy.
Since launching in Essex in 2001, TLC (Teddies for Loving Care), a children’s charity founded and supported by Essex Freemasons, has provided teddy bears to children attending A&E departments and paediatric wards, offering reassurance to young patients at times of anxiety, pain, or uncertainty. Over the past 25 years, millions of bears have been given, each with its own story.
The event has been created to offer those families a relaxed and fun day together, and an opportunity to reflect on the small acts of kindness that can make a big difference during difficult moments.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, families who attend the picnic are invited to share their TLC story, if they wish. This might be:
• A memory of when their child received a TLC teddy
• A photo of a well-loved bear that has become part of the family
• A short message about what that moment meant to them
Stories can be shared in an informal, relaxed way on the day, or submitted afterwards. Families can choose whether their story is shared publicly or kept private. There is no obligation to take part, and TLC is keen to ensure families feel supported at all times.
The Teddy Bear Picnic will include:
• Teddy bear photo opportunities and keepsakes
• Children’s entertainment and interactive activities
• Creative play areas including colouring and crafts
• Opportunities to meet TLC volunteers
• A memory wall sharing messages and reflections
Families are encouraged to bring along their own TLC teddy, whether new or well-worn, and enjoy a picnic-style gathering focused on togetherness, and community.
