Is Vaping Eco-friendly?

0

Though initially designed to help smokers quit smoking, vapers or e-cigarettes have become popular among non-smokers. As the use of vapes grows, concerns have increased about their environmental impact.

Impact of vaping on the environment

Electronic cigarettes have several benefits, and many agree that vaping is less harmful than cigarettes. However, vapes are not as friendly to the environment. One of the main ways that vaping devices negatively impact the environment is through electronic waste or e-waste. Vaping toxic waste comes from

Packaging materials. The recyclability of packaging materials for vaping devices varies depending on the source. In some cases, the packaging materials used for shipping and storing these devices may not be easily recyclable, leading to prolonged degradation times when disposed of. For instance, materials like styrofoam and plastic can take over 500 years to decompose.
Batteries.  Batteries, in general, are harmful to the environment, and those found in vapes are no different. Improperly disposed batteries tend to corrode, and their materials leak into our soil and water or cause fires, harming both people and animals. Not only that, but the mining process of materials used like lithium can cause soil degradation and further damage to the environment of the communities involved.
Pods and cartridges. Vape devices have metals and plastics in the body or cartridges which are pollutants when disposed of. Metal takes a while to decompose and plastic never really decomposes but turns to microplastics.

Vaping devices can also contribute to environmental harm through their production and transportation processes, further adding to the global carbon footprint. Moreover, despite containing lower nicotine levels compared to cigarettes, nicotine residues can still contaminate soil, water, and wildlife, posing ecological risks.

Eco-friendly steps for vapers

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned vaper, there are specific measures you can take to protect the environment.

Choose re-chargeable vapes

Vapers can choose rechargeable vaping devices, which sometimes come with refillable tanks. Though they usually cost higher, such vape kits can be recharged over and over again making them a cost-effective and sustainable option. Instead of continually buying new devices, you can only replace the coil or refill the vape juice.

Such devices are sold with the vape juice or e-liquid separately. Once the vape juice is over, you can refill it several times before the flavor quality decreases. Such devices are typically made with durable materials, making them last longer and eco-friendly.

More manufacturing companies are leaning towards rechargeable devices. For example, the ELFBAR Pod System by ElfBar now has a separate rechargeable battery with disposable pre-filled pods that come in the same enjoyable flavors as the popular Elf Bar 600 Disposable Vapes.

Recycle

Recycling of batteries has never been easier. Vapers can recycle their vape batteries instead of throwing them in the bin. When batteries are thrown in the bin, they go straight to the landfill and their degradation process is toxic. However, when you put them in a recycle bin at home or take them to your local store or supermarket which usually has dedicated recycle bins for batteries. Some vape manufacturers also allow you to return batteries for recycling.

An alternative way of recycling is by re-gifting fellow vapers with vapes you do not like instead of throwing them away.

Go for eco-friendly vapes

Since we have already established that disposable vapes are harmful to the environment if you find it necessary to acquire one, opt for an environmentally-friendly choice. Typically made of recyclable materials like glass, metal, or biodegradable polymers, these gadgets can help reduce their negative environmental effects. Not only can they be recycled, but they also decompose naturally or faster. Choosing an eco-friendly disposable vape will allow you to enjoy your vaping experience knowing you are preserving the environment.

Use long-life batteries

Opting for cheaper vapes that often come with lower-quality batteries may be tempting initially. However, it’s important to note that these devices typically require frequent battery replacements due to faster depletion, potentially making them less cost-effective in the long run.

For that reason, longer-lasting batteries are a greater option as they allow you to enjoy vaping for longer without replacing the device. More importantly, they reduce the number of batteries in the trash.

Charge mindfully

A long-life battery indeed offers the advantage of extended usage between charges. Nevertheless, it is still advisable to fully charge your device before utilizing it to ensure optimal performance and longevity.  This extends its battery life saving the environment and saving you money as well.

If you would rather not wait for the device to fully charge, getting multiple batteries allows you to have a fully charged battery as a backup.

Power off

Just like you would a microwave or TV, power off your e-cigarette. Leaving it on standby consumes more energy and electricity and may also be harmful to its battery life.

Final thoughts

A puff of cloud is safer for the environment than a puff of smoke, but there is still an impact left on the environment by vaping. It is therefore important to raise awareness of eco-friendly vaping practices that can minimize vaping’s negative impact on the environment.
