NHS Trust chairman awarded honorary doctorate for contribution to health equity and inclusion

Professor David Sallah has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Aston University in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the field of mental health and his work in promoting racial equality in the healthcare system.

He was awarded the honour in front of other graduands and guests at a ceremony at Eastside Rooms on Friday 21 July.

With over 30 years of experience in health and social care, Professor Sallah has held numerous influential positions in the NHS, private sector, and academia. He has made contributions to the field of mental health, both at a national, government and international level.

From 2001 to 2007, Professor Sallah served as the national director responsible for the Department of Health programme for delivering race equality in mental healthcare. During this time, he played a pivotal role in shaping the policies and strategies that aimed to eliminate racial disparities in mental healthcare services.

Professor Sallah currently serves as chairman of the Board of Directors and Council of Governors of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and continues to contribute to the development and improvement of health services within the integrated health and care system of Birmingham and Solihull.

Professor David Sallah holds a masters degree in management and a PhD from Aston University. Throughout his career he has been recognised as an internationally renowned researcher, leader and health service developer and has held senior positions within the NHS, UK Government, higher education and the private sector.

Professor Sallah said: “I am honoured to receive this doctorate from Aston University. This recognition serves as a testament to the significance of mental health and the pursuit of racial equality in our healthcare system.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have made contributions to these crucial areas throughout my career. Together, we can continue to work towards a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system that supports the wellbeing of all individuals.”

Professor Aleks Subic, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Aston University, said: “I am delighted to bestow this honorary doctorate upon Professor David Sallah in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field of mental health and his unwavering dedication to promoting racial equality within healthcare.
