Stephen Metcalfe, MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock, attended a remembrance service on Sunday to remember the lives of Nepalese Gurkhas and recognise 208 years of British Army membership and friendship.

On 23 April, Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre hosted Gurkha Remembrance Sunday. This year marks the 208th Anniversary of the Brigade of Gurkhas which joined the British Army in 1815.

There were speeches from Stephen Metcalfe, James Halden, the Mayor of Thurrock, and Qaisar Abbas, Purfleet Councillor, as well as a bagpipe performance from a Gurkha soldier. Gurkha veterans and members of the Nepalese community were in attendance.

Stephen Metcalfe said: “It was great to be a part of Gurkha Remembrance Sunday in Thurrock and celebrate the fantastic alliance that has lasted 208 years. I am glad that local councillors are active supporters of the Nepalese Gurkha community – with the first Nepalese cemetery and support for Gurkha families with language courses.”
