UK’s only sea otters celebrate third anniversary

National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham is excited to be celebrating three years of the UK’s only sea otters, Ola and Ozzy.

To mark the occasion, the animal care team at SEA LIFE Birmingham have thrown the adorable pair a special celebration, including enrichment activities, an ice cake and party decorations to spruce up their habitat.

Ola and Ozzy, were both rescued off the coast of Alaska by the Alaskan SEA LIFE Centre, a facility that rescues and rehabilitates marine mammals. Both otters remained in the care of the Alaskan SEA LIFE for 2 years, before being transported to Birmingham – the two VIOs (Very Important Otters) even received a police escort to the SEA LIFE Centre.

Now fit and healthy and thriving in their new home, Ozzy is a very well-behaved otter who is always perfect in their training sessions. He adores all food, however, to celebrate the anniversary he was treated to his favourite dish, squid.

Ola is six months younger than Ozzy, and in contrast to her pal, can be a fussy eater at times, although she was happy to tuck into her favourite meal of prawns to celebrate the big day! She never sits still and is always keeping busy, whether that be enjoying enrichment activities or keeping a keen eye on SEA LIFE staff whenever maintenance is carried out.

Amy Langham, General Manager at National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham, said: “We cannot believe Ola and Ozzy have been here with us in Birmingham for three years now. It’s amazing to think what an incredible journey they’ve been on and we’re so happy to be home to the UK’s only sea otters.

“Ola and Ozzy are the perfect pair, always looking out for each other and showing affection to both each other and the animal care team. The past three years have flown by and we couldn’t let the anniversary go by without throwing the adorable otters a little party to celebrate, here’s to the next three years!”

What’s more, guests now have the once in a lifetime opportunity to meet Ola and Ozzy up close and personal. Visitors to National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham can now book a personal session with the sea otters, including giving them toys to play with, ice treats and a guided experience led by a trained aquarist, who will inform guests all about the otters’ lifestyles, diets and habitat.
