EMR Metal Recycling’s site in Silvertown has partnered with Start Young UK to provide much needed support to young people throughout the capital.

Start Young UK, a charity founded in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, aims to support young people in fulfilling their basic needs. With their immediate response during the pandemic, they were able to deliver over 400 parcels throughout the area, including care packages and food hampers, underwear, gloves, hats and scarves. Since its inception the charity has developed a number of programmes which support young people throughout their education and into their chosen careers.

EMR Silvertown’s donation will support families in obtaining school uniforms and offer resources to the local Scout Group so that each child can attend for one hour per week. Start Young UK used funds to provide Christmas gifts to young people, including personal care packages, food hampers and basic clothing items for the winter months.

Tom Fenton, General Manager at EMR Silvertown, described why it was important for the site to provide support: “With the rising cost of living affecting families across the UK, young people often go without the vital resources that they need to flourish and enjoy their childhood.

“In partnering with Start Young UK, myself and the team are delighted to be able to relieve some of the financial burdens that families are experiencing, allowing children to concentrate on their education and join groups that give young people new experiences each year. I look forward to continuing to work with Start Young UK to help them in the vital work that they do.”

Angela Caroo of Start Young UK added: “I would first like to thank EMR for all they have done to support these children and for joining our buddy scheme.

“As a local organisation the support EMR has given is vital. Our hope is that many businesses join EMR in partnering with Start Young UK to help invest in our future generations.”

This partnership was created as part of EMR’s Young Futures Reimagined initiative, a programme which aims to help young people across the country to build brighter futures. Start Young UK becomes one of over 40 charities to have been supported by the initiative.
