A simple innovation to change the dressing on c-section wounds for new mothers, which reduced infections, has won the Most Effective Contribution to Patient Safety category of the HSJ Partnership Awards.

The project was also highly commended in the Best Acute Sector Partnership category and was also shortlisted in the Most Effective Contribution to Clinical Redesign.

Michael Magro, our obstetrics and gynaecology consultant who led the project, said: “We are so excited to have won this award and that our hard work over the last 12 months has been recognised nationally. What’s more important is the women giving birth by caesarean section at Queen’s Hospital now have access to this technology and we have demonstrated a continued reduction in wound infections.

“This project would not have been possible without the support of Essity, the company which produces the Leukomed Sorbact wound dressings. The next step is to see if it can be rolled out in our other specialities such as gynaecology, general and vascular surgery.”

Our Trust also won in the Best Healthcare Provider Partnership category for our work with Medefer and NHS North East London (NEL) to reduce waiting times for gastroenterology patients. Medefer set up a virtual outpatient service to help local GPs manager referrals.
Sas Banerjee, our endoscopy and joint gastroenterology lead, said: “This award is great recognition of what working closely with our partners can achieve for our patients.

“Our relationship with Medefer helps to reduce our waiting lists by ensuring the referrals who reach our specialists are the patients which really need to be seen in our hospitals.”

Bahman Nedjat-Shokouhi, CEO of Medefer added: “The partnership of the gastroenterology teams between Medefer and BHRUT has resulted in outstanding care for patients. We’ve reduced the outpatient demand by almost 80 per cent, enabling BHRUT’s team to deliver the best performance for outpatients in London and develop one of the top JAG endoscopy units in the country.”

The awards were held in London on Thursday 23 March.
