SPECSAVERS NEW MALDEN’s Optometrist Director, Dr Zimar Sivardeen hosted a meeting with His Excellency Sekhonyana N. Bereng, High Commissioner to the High Commission of the Kingdom of Lesotho on 5th January.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss eye health in Lesotho and for His Excellency to gain an understanding of optical practice here in the UK. As Chair of Commonwealth Future, an independent organisation he founded in 2018, Dr Sivardeen is very actively involved in sharing and striving towards the organisation’s vision for the provision and accessibility of eye care for everyone around the Commonwealth, and to transform the lives of more than 2.4 billion people across the region.

During the meeting Dr Sivardeen discussed the core strategy of Commonwealth Future and outlined plans for the forthcoming year which includes awareness raising and developing partnerships with like-minded professionals, both in the UK and across the Commonwealth, leveraging relationships with key bodies and governments across the region; with the overarching aim of making progress in optical eye care provision.

Commenting on the meeting, Dr Sivardeen said; ‘It was an honour to host His Excellency Sekhonyana N. Bereng at my practice in New Malden and to talk to a representative from another government. We discussed eye care services here in the UK and Lesotho. The visit provided an opportunity for His Excellency to see first-hand how our optical practice is set up and the range of products and services available to our customers.’

Dr Sivardeen continued; ‘In my capacity as Chair of Commonwealth Future, the meeting provided the perfect opportunity to put forward our aims and vision. It was also a great opportunity to foster bi-lateral relationships between our two countries. I will meet His Excellency at a forthcoming Commonwealth Future function planned for March, where he will learn more about the organisation and the provision of eye care services both here in the UK and around the Commonwealth.
