Jacinda Ardern will lose next election, says former New Zealand PM

JACINDA Ardern is heading for defeat at the next election, according to former New Zealand premier Winston Peters.

Asked if he thought she would be out of power at the next election, he told GB News: “I don’t think it, I know it.

“The only reason why she became the Prime Minister was because in our negotiations we sought a certain economic and social plan and it was signed up to, we agreed to it. And they simply couldn’t keep that agreement.

Asked about the current state of New Zealand, Mr Peters said: “We are facing, like many countries, a cost of living crisis. But the problem is, a lot of it is at home born, or brought about by a failure of governmental action. And that goes into energy as well.

“And then power, which has been an advantage plus electricity has been an advantage to us. These things are all problematic at the moment.

“And so we’re in a malaise so to speak with a year ago for the next election.”

He added: “…some people are saying, well, I couldn’t do worse than the last drought. And neither of those options really are what New Zealand or any of the countries are looking for.

“Countries are looking for maximal, superior, permanent, sustainable government that will last and we’ve had too many transient ideas that simply don’t work in our country of late.”

On the current New Zealand government, he said: “The polls here are not as sound as they are in some countries. But the signs are all there, that they’re in deep, deep trouble.

“The question is, will the alternative do much better, which is what this country desperately needs.”
