RSPCA Cambridge has received a £1,000 donation from homebuilder Barratt and David Wilson Homes to assist with their work helping animals who have been abused and mistreated, as well as providing low cost veterinary services for low-income pet owners.
The charity is a local branch affiliated to the National RSPCA. It has been running a low-cost veterinary clinic in Cambridge since the 1950s, initially in a converted terraced house, but more recently in a purpose-built building.
The donation from the leading homebuilder will help the charity with its essential work saving animals. Just after the charity received the donation they were notified by a local vet that an injured lurcher puppy had been brought in to them to be put to sleep. They were able to use the funds to save her life and now the puppy is recovering in a new loving home.
Rosemary Rodd, Branch Treasurer at RSPCA Cambridge, said: “We were delighted as the kind donation will make it possible for us to help more animals. For example it would cover the net cost of running our outpatient clinic for three weeks, or help two fracture repair operations on injured animals.
“We have experienced a much higher than normal level of requests for help for a variety of reasons including owners who were previously coping but were experiencing loss of income due to the pandemic.
“On behalf of RSPCA Cambridge, I’d like to say a big thank you. It’s great to see a large company that cares about their local community and supports local charities.”
The pandemic has been a very challenging and difficult time for the charity, and it had to adapt to new ways of working. The clinic was previously run as a drop-in centre but it is now only seeing animals by appointment in order to limit the number of people in the building at any given time.
