A Basildon man has been found guilty of flytipping a mattress on Ryedene Close.

David O’Neil, 60, of 11 Great Oxcroft, Laindon, appeared at Basildon Magistrates Court on 21 October 2019 after being summoned to the magistrates for flytipping on 22 May 2019.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and the bench acknowledged the guilty plea. As a result, he was sentenced to a fine of £200 for being careless, ordered to pay costs of £250 and a £30 victim surcharge, adding up to £480, which will be deducted from his benefits fortnightly.

Chairman of Basildon Council’s Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee Councillor David Harrison, said: “It’s a minority of residents who fly-tip within the borough. We want to make clear that when we identify the people who are responsible for dumping, they are held accountable.

“Flytipping doesn’t go unpunished and we will continue to prosecute those who fly-tip. The majority of residents do what is right to look after the environment, which is something we can all be proud of.

“We are now aggressively targeting flytippers – so don’t do it or you will end up in court.”
