A campaign that set out to bring the community together against the blight of dumped waste and litter rounded off with a Basildon Council staff litter blitz around the town centre and surrounding roads today.

Around 20 staff members spent their lunch hour supporting cleansing colleagues picking up litter with the We’re Cleaning Up campaign’s lead councillors, Cllr Gavin Callaghan and Cllr David Harrison.

Over the summer residents and groups from around the borough took part in litter blitzes and community events to clean up their public spaces including pupils from Abacus Primary School in Wickford and Basildon’s Greensted Junior School.

Leader of Basildon Council Councillor Gavin Callaghan said: “Throughout the duration of the campaign I’ve been moved by how passionate our communities are about the place they live and keeping it clean and tidy. It’s been heartening to meet community groups, individuals and school children who are all doing their bit side by side with the council. Basildon Council staff share that enthusiasm which has been evident at today’s event.”

Chairman of the Neighbourhoods and Public Spaces Committee, Councillor David Harrison added: “The support our communities have put behind this campaign has been wonderful to see and shows how strongly people feel about the blight of dumped rubbish and litter. Everyone is responsible for ensuring all their waste is disposed of correctly.”

To encourage the continued spirit of the We’re Cleaning Up campaign to inspire others Basildon Council will help facilitate community action.

The council can offer individuals and groups assistance with litter picking equipment and ensure bags of litter are collected.
