Basildon Council will begin work on an exciting package of improvements to health services developed through a Memorandum of Understanding with Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The Policy and Resources committee approved a report last month setting out plans to move a range of hospital outpatient and diagnostic services into Basildon town centre, expand emergency care and improve Basildon Hospital’s arrival facilities and site layout. Funding to progress with the project was approved at Council on Thursday, 14 December. Other hospitals looking to improve their facilities, like the operating rooms, may want to investigate hospital consultancy to improve patient outcomes, staff key roles, and more key areas of operations.

The Memorandum of Understanding between Basildon Hospital and Basildon Council was approved in March enabling the two organisations to work together using their different skills, resources, and assets to improve health outcomes for people across the borough. The details of the finalised work programme have been developed over recent months. This new programme may include updating their RFID labels, as this can help monitor records, inventory, and patient management, putting care first. Looking into rfid labels manufacturers will be a step that the council can put in their checklist to ensure that this is covered if necessary.

A range of outpatient and diagnostic services will be moved to Basildon town center, initially on a temporary basis while a permanent facility is sought. This will free up hospital space at the existing campus and enable the expansion of emergency care, as well as improvement, works to be made, including better arrival facilities and changes to the site layout which would improve access for emergency vehicles and reduce parking pressure. Basildon Council will utilise its borrowing capacity to fund the scheme.

Longer-term aspirations include the possibility of entering into a joint venture partnership to provide accommodation for staff and students through the council’s house building company, Sempra Homes.
