5 TIPS FOR HEALTHY FESTIVAL FEET

Around 14 million people said they planned to attend a festival in 2015 and signs point to this number rising. One thing that seems to go hand in hand with these popular, predominately outdoor events is the fear of them being a wash out.

Glastonbury, which is just around the corner, and the Isle of White Music Festival have become renowned not just for great music but for wet weather, wellies and mud – and the festival spirit of carrying on regardless.

To help prevent rain putting a dampener on your dancing shoes AXA PPP healthcare shares five handy steps to healthy festival feet.

1. Pre-festival prep – cut toe nails straight across, keeping them at a comfortable length, using a nail file for sharp corners. Clean feet with warm water and a mild soap and make sure you dry them thoroughly, especially the space between the toes. Emollients can help moisturise dry rough skin but avoid applying excess lotion in-between toes. Build-up of various bacteria or increased levels of moisture could lead to other issues you might then need to deal with in the future, for example, you may notice you’re beginning to grow fungus around your toenails eventually requiring you to have laser toenail fungus removal or something similar.

2. Put your best festival foot(wear) forward – pick shoes, sandals or boots that fit well to avoid blisters (if they’re too tight) or calluses (if they’re too loose). Make sure they’re appropriate for the weather and keep you stable on your feet to avoid slips and falls.

3. Sock it to me – wear natural fibre socks that aren’t too tight or perhaps fleece-lined boots. It can get cold at night when you’re camping so bed socks are useful to pack too.

4. Give your feet a chance to breathe – To help keep your feet dry give them a chance to breathe without shoes and socks on when you get back to your tent. If your feet are extremely cold or are wet then reheat them slowly as too much heat too quickly – such as heating them in front of a fire – can cause damage, pain and chilblains

5. Stretch it out – being on your feet all day can take its toll so try a few foot exercises and stretches to help keep mobile and promote good blood circulation.
