It is with great sadness that Hertfordshire Zoo announces the sad passing of Sahee, its male Asiatic lion, at the age of 10.
Sahee was put to sleep following a period of declining health caused by progressive kidney failure. The difficult decision was made by the zoo’s veterinary and animal care teams to protect his quality of life after tests revealed a significant deterioration in his condition.
Sahee arrived at Hertfordshire Zoo in 2025 alongside his female companion, Sonika, as the inaugural residents of the new Lions of India habitat. He quickly became a first favourite with keepers, staff, and visitors alike with his regal appearance and cheeky personality.
Born at Le Pal Wildlife Park in France in 2016, Sahee previously lived at Bristol Zoo Gardens, where he was first paired with Sonika, and spent time at Hertfordshire Zoo’s sister charity, The Big Cat Sanctuary, before moving to his final home in Hertfordshire.
Cassie Jones, Head of the Cat Team at Hertfordshire Zoo, said: “Sahee had some very big shoes to fill when he arrived, becoming our first male lion since the passing of Moto, a much loved lion who was incredibly popular with both our staff and visitors. But it wasn’t long before Sahee won the hearts of his keepers and everyone who met him with his big personality, handsome looks and confident, sassy character. He could be wonderfully silly and playful too, and shared a very special bond with his female partner, Sonika. We will miss his presence, his personality, and all the little moments that made him so special to us. The zoo will be very quiet without him”.
The zoo’s primary focus has now turned to supporting Sonika as she adjusts to the loss of her partner.
