Welbeck Cambridge has announced the winning entries in its local schools’ art competition, which will feature as part of the paediatric waiting area at its new private healthcare centre opening in Sawston in early 2027.
Created to help make the healthcare centre environment more welcoming and engaging for young patients, the competition invited children from local schools to imagine a transformed version of Cambridge under the theme: “Cambridge Reimagined.”
Students were encouraged to creatively reinterpret the city through imaginative worlds and landscapes, from underwater Cambridge and woodland takeovers to futuristic alien planets, with selected artwork set to be displayed as a rotating mural projection within the centre’s dedicated paediatrics waiting area.
Following submissions from participating schools across the region, Welbeck has now selected three winning entries from each participating school.
The shortlisted winners include:
St Faith’s Prep School, Cambridge
· Maggie M, Year 8
· Eilidh F, Year 8
Sara SF, Year 8
William Westley Church of England Primary School, Whittlesford, Cambridge
Keltie W, aged 10
Lois C, aged 10
Evelina Y, aged 10
The project forms part of Welbeck’s wider commitment to creating patient-centred healthcare environments while strengthening connections with local schools and communities ahead of the private healthcare centre’s opening early 2027.
The new centre in Sawston will serve self-paying and privately insured patients across the Cambridgeshire region and will include a dedicated paediatric waiting area designed to help children feel comfortable and relaxed before appointments.
As part of the competition brief, participating students were asked to produce A2 landscape artwork using predominantly 2D mediums such as paint, pencil or ink, while following a bespoke colour palette developed for the hospital environment.
Andrew Chadwick-Jones, CEO of Welbeck Health Partners commented:
“This competition has been a wonderful way to engage with local schools and celebrate the creativity of young people across our community. The winning artwork will help create a welcoming and uplifting environment for children and families visiting our centre when we open in 2027.”
Natasha King, Centre Director at Welbeck Cambridge, added:
“We were incredibly impressed by the imagination and creativity shown in all of the submissions. The artwork will play an important role in helping to create a calm, child-friendly space that feels positive and engaging for our younger patients.”
Shelley Ankin, Head of Art and Design at St Faiths Prep School Cambridge, also commented:
“It was wonderful to hear the news that artwork submitted by 3 pupils from St. Faith’s was commended so highly for the new Welbeck Hospital mural competition. It is an amazing achievement that the pupils’ unique and creative interpretations of the design brief were selected and will be projected on the wall in the waiting area of the Children’s Department in rotation. At Faith’s, developing our pupils’ creativity is a core and vital part of our lessons, and we actively encourage students to engage with and relate to the world around them, so for Maggie, Sara and Eidilh’s original ideas, aptitude and talent to be recognised by The Welbeck team is fantastic.”
The winning artworks will be digitally projected onto the paediatric waiting area wall on a rotating basis once the private healthcare centre opens in 2027, helping to create an imaginative and uplifting experience for children and families visiting.
