Unseen exhibition shines a light on children in care and employment opportunities

A powerful new exhibition will explore the experiences of children in care and care leavers through photography.

Essex County Council will host The Unseen – A Lens on Our Journey. It takes place between Tuesday 26 May and Friday 29 May at High Chelmer Shopping Centre, Chelmsford.

The exhibition features powerful images of meaningful objects chosen by young care leavers. Each object tells a story. A memory, milestone, or moment that shaped who they are today.

The exhibition will be showcased alongside five council services, offering information and recruitment opportunities for local residents. These are:

Independent Visitors Service
Residential recruitment
Fostering recruitment
Employability
Supported Lodgings

Visitors will have the chance to speak to staff, ask questions and find out how they can support young people in care.

A spokesperson for Essex County Council said: “The Unseen is a powerful reminder that every young person in care has a story, a voice and huge potential.

“This exhibition helps bring those stories to life. It also shows the many ways people in Essex can make a difference. Local people can help through employment, fostering, volunteering or support services.

“We want more people to come forward and be part of a young person’s care journey.”

The exhibition follows the release of The Unseen, a short documentary that brings to light the voices of care-experienced individuals.

It was made as part of the Essex Year of Opportunity, a £1.33 million campaign by Essex County Council for 2025 and 2026.

Through projects and partnerships with organisations, the campaign removes barriers into work and education for all ages by teaching essential skills.

The Unseen challenges organisations and businesses to recognise the potential of care leavers and create meaningful employment opportunities.

Essex currently supports more than 1,100 children and young people in looked-after settings.

Residents are encouraged to visit High Chelmer Shopping Centre, discover the stories behind the images and learn more about the rewarding opportunities available.
