The imaginative project, led by Senior Activities Coordinator Julie Barnard, saw free Metro newspapers, collected each morning from the local train station, repurposed into stunning tutu-style outfits. The initiative combined sustainability with creativity, giving residents a unique opportunity to engage in a hands-on activity with a striking visual result.

Julie collaborated with two fashion students from Seevic College, Carla Debenham and Louisa Butler, who visited the home weekly over a five-week period. Together, they worked alongside residents to design and construct the intricate costumes, sharing skills and sparking creativity across generations.

Several residents took an active role in the project, including Janet Welch, a former professional dressmaker, who brought valuable expertise and enthusiasm to the sessions. Her involvement added an extra layer of authenticity and pride to the finished pieces.

Julie Barnard said:

“This project has been a wonderful way to bring people together while doing something creative and meaningful. Seeing the residents’ ideas come to life, and the pride they feel in what they’ve achieved, has been incredibly rewarding.”

The initiative highlights how simple, everyday materials can be transformed into something beautiful, while also demonstrating the power of creativity to enrich lives within the care home community.
