A Billericay opticians has been helping some of Specsavers’ Best Worst Team see more clearly on and off the football pitch, thanks to an eye test and some new glasses.

Specsavers Billericay was visited by two Warley FC stalwarts and Billericay locals, David Laye and Owen Fern, and the High Street store was delighted to be able to bring their prescription – and their style – firmly up-to-date.

Warley FC, based in Brentwood, were recently named Specsavers’ Best Worst Team after a difficult last season that saw them lose 18 of their 20 matches and concede 81 goals.
The national initiative supports grassroots teams judged to be the worst in Britain, providing professional expertise and money can’t buy experiences to help transform their fortunes, documented in an 11-part YouTube series

For Warley FC, that has included managerial support and mentorship from football pundit and former player Micah Richards, a training session with Premier League record breaker James Milner, and nutritional support from chef to Premiership football stars Jonny Marsh.

Hassan Ruparell, Ophthalmic Director at Specsavers Billericay, said: ‘We were really delighted to see the boys in store and find out more about their journey so far as part of Specsavers’ Best Worst Team.

‘We know that being able to see clearly is a pretty big part of being able to beat the competition on the football field, so we hope our intervention with a last-minute spectacle substitution will give the boys the boost they need to smash the rest of this season and beyond.’

Specsavers Billericay is open seven days a week at 68 High Street, Billericay, Essex, CM12 9BS.
