200 business leaders and key figures from the agricultural industry from across Essex gathered at Braxted Park Estate for the inaugural Rural Connections summit, a Growth Agency initiative celebrating the innovation, resilience and opportunity within the county’s rural economy.
Hosted by the Growth Agency, part of Essex County Council, the event brought together entrepreneurs, landowners, producers, environmental groups and policy makers for a day of inspiration and collaboration. Delegates explored new ways rural enterprises are diversifying and embracing innovation to build sustainable futures for Essex’s countryside communities.
The event featured an impressive line-up of speakers, including Cllr Louise McKinlay, Cllr Mark Durham, Mike Holland, Dale Symons, and Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier, alongside exhibitors showcasing advances in agri-tech, business support and digital infrastructure. A highlight of the day was Professor McDonald-Maier’s demonstration of his world-leading fruit-picking robot prototype, representing the cutting edge of rural technology and automation.
Interactive sessions and networking opportunities helped to forge new partnerships and spark conversations around challenges and opportunities in areas such as diversification, planning, transport and the skills needed to sustain a thriving rural economy.
Cllr Louise McKinlay, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities, Economic Growth and Prosperity at Essex County Council, said: “The energy in the room was brilliant. This first Rural Connections event showed just how important our rural communities are to Essex. When people come together, share ideas and try new things – good things happen. The conversations today will help build stronger partnerships and unlock new opportunities so our rural areas can grow and thrive.”
Cllr Mark Durham, Deputy Cabinet Member for Economic Development, a keynote speaker at the event, added: “Seeing so many businesses and organisations come together was a real highlight. The event proved that our rural economy is dynamic and forward-looking, and that by sharing knowledge and working together we can create sustainable opportunities for all.”
Nick Shuttleworth, Executive Director of Rural Community Council of Essex (RCCE), commented: “It was a very successful event and great to see such a large and energetic audience. We found it really helpful for our aims of promoting the needs in rural communities across the county, especially on affordable rural housing, and we look forward to participating in any similar events in future.”
With such strong engagement and positive outcomes, the Growth Agency has confirmed plans to make Rural Connections an annual fixture, ensuring continued momentum and support for Essex’s vibrant rural business community.
