The Hideout – Langenhoe and Abberton Youth Club Thrives Thanks to Wickes Community Programme Donation

The Hideout Allotment Club, a youth initiative, is delighted to announce the significant positive impact of a recent donation from the Wickes Community Programme. The generous contribution of a storage container and a table has provided much-needed infrastructure, allowing the club to expand its activities and better serve its growing number of young members.

Beyond the thrill of cultivation, many children have developed a keen interest in the local wildlife. Members have enthusiastically created a “slow worm retreat” and ingeniously repurposed an old fish tank into a “hotel for snails,” demonstrating their creativity and connection to the natural world.

Rachel Rosevear at The Hideout Allotment Club said, “The kids are loving being on the plot. “Some enjoy the manual work and planting, getting excited to see how their efforts have grown each session. We even have some who pop over in their own time to keep an eye on our crops!”

Since its opening on March 23rd, The Hideout Allotment Club has seen its membership steadily increase, with children eagerly engaging in various aspects of gardening and nature. The progress of The Hideout Allotment Club in just a few months is remarkable, especially considering it operates solely on the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of donations.

The Wickes Colchester donation has been transformative for the club’s operations. The new storage container offers a secure, dry space for all equipment. Additionally, the table, when paired with another donated set of benches, has created a vital social hub.

The Wickes Community Programme is open to all local community groups seeking help for improvement projects. Find out more by going to www.wickes.co.uk/community-programme or pop into your local Wickes store.
