Matt O’Neill: ‘Dance Dance Dance is oozing potential but falls short at the last hurdle’

Dance Dance Dance is a new show on ITV 1 that is promising an entertaining show to fill the gap left by X Factor on a Sunday. The show focuses on celebrities performing well known dances and iconic music video performances. The big question to ask ITV, is that the show draws most of its inspiration from BBCs Lets Dance For Comic Relief. The shows presenters for me are a wrong choice, In my opinion Alesha Dixon would do better on her own as Will Best is a spare part that has no natural personality on camera. This weeks episode showed a huge improvement in Dance ability of our contestants, with the performances being more engaging. The judging panel is very strong with them giving constructive criticism and allowing the spotlight to be on the contestants, instead of themselves (take a hint Louis Walsh).

The Good

Jess Wright is my personal favourite performer, she brings the moves and a youthful energy to the show. Her performance of ‘Dirrty’ by Christina Aguilera being my stand out performance of the night capturing the sense of Xtina in the music video. The performance was flirty, feisty and fun keeping me entertained from start to finish.

Jonny and his partner are also stand out contestants for me, although Jonny is a better dancer and sometimes carries her through the dance. Overall they are technically the winners however on entertainment value it’s Jess Wright all the way. Jonny and Chrissy deserve props as they had the hardest dance of the night, to Cheryl’s ‘Parachute’ and they danced it effortlessly, with them receiving a standing ovation from all three judges ( and myself).

Lucy Jo Hudson was also good on the night with her performance of ‘Baby One More Time’ doing Britney proud showing me that she is also in the running to win the show.

The Bad

JB and Chloe started off the night with Nsync ‘Bye Bye’ and boy was it a major cheese fest. I feel as if Chloe is a better dancer than her husband, but neither of them bring me any entertainment. They are not the worst couple on the show, but for him to have experience in performing JB is a major let down.

The Awful
There is one couple on the program that make me want to turn my television over to Songs Of Praise, as they migrate on me to much. That couple is Fiona and Ronnie and after watching her ruin umbrella last week my expectations couldn’t get any lower. Well they DID! They performed WILL.I.AM and Justin Bieber ‘That Power’ which consisted of them making shapes and jolting back and forward for two minutes. There was nothing Justin Bieber about the performance, it was more like Justin Boring. I cant even talk about Ronnie’s ‘Livin La Vida Loca’ dance. I cant get those two minutes of my life back, it was that awful.

Final Thoughts
My Final thoughts to round up are the viewers will get bored of the show in time and it will struggle to get past making just one series. This is a shame as if it was live on a Sunday night with the audience voting for there favourite celebrity, that would make viewers more engaged and keep them committed to the show. Their choice of celebrities is poor with no one having a huge audience pull like Katie Price and Gemma Collins would. I hope the show succeeds and sticks with the franchise as we need this on a Sunday.
